Typhoon Rai Response

Super Typhoon Rai hit the Philippines on 16 December 2021. With winds of around 195km/h and gusts of up to 270km/h, the typhoon affected millions and forced some 400,000 people to run for safety.

Thanks to generous cbm supporters like you, cbm’s partner visited individuals and families, many including someone with a disability, in the affected region of Surigao Del Norte. Some assessment staff had their own disability, adding a special level of awareness to the visits. Over 80% of those visited reported damage to their homes, and a similar number had their livelihoods/incomes lost or negatively affected.

Generous gifts from people like you help provide immediate food, safe water, and house repair materials; mental health and psychosocial support to those affected; and replacements for assistive devices lost. These included walking sticks, hearing aids, glasses, and wheelchairs, etc. Essential items to enable people with disabilities access to places like support services, markets and evacuation centres.

cbm’s partner reported valuable learnings and experiences from the response so communities can be better prepared for future disasters. Ensuring that no one is left behind.

A final quote from Victor, a member of the assessment team:
“I am very thankful and give salutes to cbm and their local partner for giving concerns and love to vulnerable people and to people with disabilities.”
