Shiva

Shiva has extremely bowed legs and can only walk short distances due to unbearable pain. He is facing a life of exclusion and his parents are too poor to afford treatment. Help break his cycle of poverty and disability.

Shiva is facing a life of poverty and disability
Shiva and sister Himali walk to school with father Tanka and mother Goma. Their home is a one-room shelter made from concrete slabs and a tin roof. The walls of the kitchen are made from bamboo sticks. It does not have a roof.Shiva is a 5 year old boy who was born with extremely bowed legs due to a rare genetic disorder.

He lives with his parents Goma and Tanka and his sister Himali in an impoverished village at the foot of the Himalayas in central Nepal.

All members of the family have some kind of orthopaedic condition. His mum Goma has a mild form of cerebral palsy, his dad Tanka has a ‘windswept’ deformity and his sister Himali has bowed legs but not as severe as Shiva.

Their home is a one-room shelter made from concrete slabs and a tin roof. The walls of the kitchen are made from bamboo sticks. It does not have a roof.

The family lives in extreme poverty. Shiva’s father Tanka secures the family’s income through goat rearing and a part-time job at a local welding workshop which is just enough to feed the family.

Shiva’s legs are extremely bowed and walking causes him severe pain
Mother Goma carries Shiva to school as he complains of severe pain in his knees. Sister Himali walks along.

When the children walk home from school Shiva and Himali are often left behind, separate from the other children and it seems like the other kids do not want to talk or walk with them.Shiva and Himali are going to the same public school which is about a 30-minute walk away.

On most days his parents need to carry Shiva to school because walking beyond a certain distance causes him severe pain in his knees and ankles.

Mother Goma sadly says that the remarks of the villagers are even more painful: “They often laughed at us saying we were paying for the sins committed in a past life.”

Every day Shiva faces the heartbreak of being rejected and mocked
Little Shiva sits on the stairs along with sister Himali as children play football in the school playground. Shiva is five years old and has severe bowlegs.

Shiva often returns home in tears because other children mimic his way of walking and never allow him to play with them.

Imagine the great pain his parents must feel not being able to help their child out of his misery.

Treatment is unaffordable
Tanka took Shiva to a health clinic where a doctor recommended a corrective surgery for Shiva’s legs to become straight after some time. Heart-broken Tanka had to walk away because with less than 3 dollars a day he just cannot afford such an expensive treatment.

Shiva has a dream
“I wish I had straight legs… I wish I could run and play with my friends”, Shiva says.
